Marvel’s most risky film since Thor is undoubtedly the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.  The property is not well known amongst comic book fans much less the average film goers.  We all assumed that to gain some notoriety, Marvel would have featured a TV spot for the film during the Super Bowl.  They chose instead to use the $4 million spot to promote Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Marvel had another venue in mind to debut the trailer, and they chose Jimmy Kimmel Live to do so.

Accompanied by an introduction from the film’s lead, Chris Pratt, the 2 and a half minute trailer managed to introduce all the members of the Guardians as well as set the tone of the film itself.  The opening is very reminiscent of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with Star Lord played by Pratt, entering a tomb to a retrieve an artifact.  The rest of the trailer has a bit of Star Wars, Galaxy Quest and Firefly all wrapped up in a glorious bundle.  If this film is a hit, which I hope it is, to me it will hammer down even more the failings of the DC Cinematic Universe in having confidence in their property.  This summer, Marvel will give us a talking Raccoon with rocket launchers, but DC has yet to give us a Wonder Woman solo film.

Guardians is by far my most anticipated film of Phase 2 and of the year.  The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Michael  Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, Peter Serafinowicz, and Benicio Del  ToroGuardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August  1st.

Here is the Official Synopsis:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of  Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the  Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s  “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos,  where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting  bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain  with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan,  Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits –  Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and  enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter  discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he  must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with  the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is  presented by Marvel Studios. The film releases August 1, 2014, and is  distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
