It had been assumed that Lady Sif, Thor’s most loyal friend and would-be romantic lead, would feature prominently in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, but we’ve learned that may not actually be the case. Despite featuring in the two Thor films and two episodes of Agents of SHIELD, Sif’s presence in the upcoming sequel is not a sure thing.
Speaking to SHAPE magazine during the cover shoot for their upcoming March 2016 issue, Jaimie Alexander, Sif herself, explained that her character’s future is literally unwritten. Stephany Folsom has just been hired to write Ragnarok’s screenplay, but it remains to be seen if Sif will remain part of the film.
“They’re reworking the story, so I don’t know if I’m going to be in it or not,” Alexander says.
This ‘reworking’ of the story surely is a consequence of the surprise revelation earlier this year that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk would play a lead role in the MCU feature. Perhaps he will eat up all the screentime that had previously been reserved for Lady Sif and the Warriors Three, Thor’s usual allies.
Additionally, Jaimie Alexander is currently starring in NBC’s new hit series, Blindspot, which has already been renewed for a second season. Could she find herself in the same predicament as Josh Dallas, who had to be recast in Thor: The Dark World due to his commitments to his ABC series, Once Upon a Time? Marvel doesn’t seem to have a problem with recasting, be it the aforementioned Josh Dallas, or Terrence Howard’s Colonel Rhodes, or even Edward Norton’s Hulk. Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case:
“I know that if they decide to have Sif, I’ll be in it. If not, it’s not like anybody else will play the character. I know that’s sort of what’s been talked about.“
Alexander is confident that the role will remain hers, even if she doesn’t appear in Ragnarok. Here’s hoping we’ll be able to see Sif and the Warriors Three have an all-out melee with the Incredible Hulk.
Thor: Ragnarok will begin shooting in Summer 2016 and is on track to release on November 3rd, 2017.
