This year is the year where all eyes are on video game films to see if they can become the new hot ticket in cinema a la comic book movies. The two big tentpole films are Warcraft, which comes out in June, directed by Doncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), and Assassin’s Creed directed by Justin urzel (Macbeth). We’ve seen the trailers for the former which all received mixed reviews, but still have us excited based on the talent behind the scenes. Now it’s Assassin’s Creed’s time to shine as the first trailer has dropped online, and it looks ripped straight from the video game. Usually when they try to make a film look like the video game they’re adapting, it comes off as cheesy. But I must say that Creed’s video game aesthetics lends its self well to it’s live action counterpart. Seeing Michael Fassbender as Callum Lynch, and Ariane Labed as Maria leaping off buildings and kicking ass, is exactly what we wanted to see in this film. I like the fact that the film takes place in the same universe of the video games, which is how you should adapt these narrative heavy video games anyway. Instead of trying to retell the same stories we got from video games, they should tell their own story that could be before, during or after the events of the video game they are trying to adapt. That way there’s less comparing the properties to their video game counterparts. Kudos for Ubisoft for make the first step in hopefully the right direction.
The film also include Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Callum Turner. Assassin’s Creed leaps into theater on December 21.
