We have long suspected that WB/DC would utilize the upcoming Man Of Steel to kick off their DC Cinematic Universe, and it seems we were right on the money.  According to a recent interview Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov conducted by EW, The Man of Steel will be “setting the tone for what the movies are going to be like going forward. In that, it’s definitely a first step.”

Robinov elaborated on what that means by adding, “I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world.  What Zack [Snyder] and Chris [Nolan] have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world.”

When asked if Nolan’s Batman exists in the same universe, he had this to say: “No, no it’s not.  Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone. The world they lived in was very isolated without any knowledge of any other superheroes.”

I’m sure that was a wise decision on their part given how the trilogy ended.  I’m just happy they finally admit that Supes will be kicking off their universe.

The films writer David Goyer added this about Nolan’s Batman and the DC universe going forward: “One of the things we dealt with on the Batman films is, Chris dislikes it when you plan something, when you say, ‘I’m going to follow this up in the next film.  He’s always said put everything you have into this film and then worry about the next film later. That gives the film it’s own integrity as opposed to being part of an overall plan. So of course the comic book fans, it’s hard not to think about [crossovers] but I, having done three Batman films and worked in that way, it’s definitely the approach we took with Man of Steel.”

On the flip side of things the films director Zack Snyder did deliver a head scratching revelation.  Superman’s famous Achilles’s Heel, Kryptonite will not be appearing in the Man of Steel.

“I’ll be honest with you, there’s no Kryptonite in the movie,” Snyder said. “Man of Steel hopes to humanize Superman, but by giving him new flaws and vulnerabilities.”

Henry Cavill who plays Superman said, “Although he is not susceptible to the frailties of mankind, he is definitely susceptible to the emotional frailties.”

If that bit of news wasn’t mind blowing enough, EW has seen footage from the film revealing that baby Kal-El is special even on his home planet of Krypton, where his birth is said to cause alarm among some citizens.  WHAT!!!  I’m curious to know what direction are they taking this film and will Superman fans be able to gel with it.

The film also stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, and Russell Crowe.  Man of Steel opens in 3D on June 14th.
