As amazing as Marvel’s The Avengers was, one question came to mind.  Where was Rhodey (Don Cheadle) AKA War Machine during the battle of New York?  Thanks to the Iron Man 3 prequel comic book, we saw that he was otherwise occupied with the search for The Mandarin.  With Avengers: Age of Ultron arriving in theaters in a year and a half from now, what will be the excuse for the newly dubbed Iron Patriot to be absent from the events on that film?  It seems that director Joss Wheddon couldn’t find any, so expect to see Cheadle in the film.

According to HitFix, Rhodes will play “a key role in the conflict with Ultron that is the main focus of the sequel.”  As we saw at the the end of Iron Man 3, Tony detonated all his suits and removed the repulser tech from his chest.  Does this mean we won’t see Tony as Iron Man in the Avengers sequel?  Could Iron Patriot be the one filling that slot?  I doubt that we won’t see Stark suit up, or at least for the end battle or something.

With no Iron Man film announced or hinted at in Phase 3 (Robert Downey Jr. has only signed on for 2 Avengers film), I think this may be Marvel positioning Rhodey to make his solo debut after the Avengers.  That actually sounds like an awesome idea, and a smart one at that.  This way we can still get an Iron Man film of sorts while still making it fresh.  We should be hearing more about Marvel’s future plans in the coming months, and at the latest, Comic Con.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will open on May 1, 2015.
