We are in the week of the new Star Wars film dropping in theaters everywhere, and it seems like the marketing for the next entry for the other ‘Star’ franchise is about to begin. The brand new trailer for Star Trek Beyond has now been posted online. Justin Lin, who directed four out of the seven Fast & Furious films is at the helm of the third Star Trek release. Gone is JJ Abrams (He still stayed on as producer) who was busy directing Star Wars The Force Awakens.
The change in director might be a factor in just how different the film looks and feels, judging by the trailer. It looks like most of the film would be on this one planet, which is typical for a regular Star trek TV episode. On the one hand it could work in differentiating Star Trek from Star Wars for the new generation. Or it could end up being a Star Trek Insurrection disaster where that film felt like an episode of television, and not something worth seeing on the big screen. It goes without saying that I’m hoping for the former.
New to the cast is Idris Elba, who is said to be playing the main villain, and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: Secret Service), who will be playing a kick-ass ally of Captain Kirk and crew. The film also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin. Star Trek Beyond beams into theaters on July 22, 2016.
