When I heard about this project, it sounded like a very ambitious undertaking. But I was intrigued because of who was behind the project. The Wachowskis (Andy and Lana) have delivered solid works in my opinion, ranging from their first film Bound to the complex Matrix Trilogy. Speed Racer was a decent entry to their filmography, but Cloud Atlas seems to be bringing them back to intelligent films. I’ve never read the book but the idea is making me consider giving it a look through. The Film Stars Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent, and Jim Sturgess. Here is a brief synopsis about the book, followed by some photos from the set courtesy of Just Jared.
A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachary, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilization — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.
In his captivating third novel, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre and time to offer a meditation on humanity’s dangerous will to power, and where it may lead us.
