In three weeks of domestic release, and four overseas, Iron Man 3 has crossed (say it in a Dr. Evil voice) one billion dollars. As it stands, it’s the second highest-grossing Marvel Universe film ever, after The Avengers. There’s little chance it ultimately matches that film’s $1.5 billion haul, but any way you cut it, the film is a massive success, and there appears to be little doubt that Disney will throw as much money at Robert Downey Jr. as it can to ensure he returns to the titular role forever and ever.

Next on the docket is Thor: The Dark World in November, followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Those films are not expected to be as massive as Iron Man 3 is, but should still be able to build upon their initial $175-$180 million domestic grosses.
